Here's what Bri says about the song. "The song paints a picture of a woman who has different political opinions than her husband, although it's clear she isn't "allowed" to express them in their home. By the chorus, she runs out of the house "children in tow" to cast her vote. To me, this feels like a story song set in a former decade but with (hopefully) a timeless message about being able to form our own political opinions as individuals and exercise our rights as American citizens to vote. The tone is politically neutral, with my favorite part being "I told my little girl, she didn't see nothing... except a woman who really believed in something."
Even though the title is "Don't Tell Daddy," the song is about the larger moral issue of a woman setting an example to her children that she can and should have her own opinion, even if the only way to do that is to vote. Also, let's not forget we have only had that right as women since 1920!"
