Texas/Red Dirt Songs That Describe 2020

Looking back and seeing the title of my end-of-year piece for 2019 was “It’s Been a Hell of a Year” seems laughable at this point because, without question, 2020 pulled a “Hold My Beer.” While the media likes to show us the world on fire and how we can’t agree on much of anything, I think most of us can agree on a common pool of emotions to describe the past twelve months. Sick, tired, lonely, worried, irritated, angry, dismissive, sad, skeptical are all almost certainly there, with a few other choice words thrown in to customize your recipe for

Songs That Made Me Fall In Love With Texas Music

Hey folks, it’s been a while. Like most of you, I’ve spent the last several months hunkered down, protecting family, busting my tail to stay gainfully employed in these uncertain times. 2020 went plaid months ago and without live music, those COVID Blues snuck in. It’s been hard to get energized about much of anything, except maybe scoring a 24-pack of toilet paper or buying hand sanitizer from a local distillery. Like many, when sanity started to wane I retreated to nostalgia. As a GenXer I spent my tween years glued to MTV, and in the last few months I’ve

It’s Been a Hell of a Year

This post isn’t about Parker McCollum, 2019 has been a hella crazy year for a lot of us. This is the first time in months I’ve had the chance to sit down for a few minutes to reflect and put a few words down. Much of the craziness in my own life was self-inflicted, my family took on the large project of building our own home in the smallish town of Granbury. My wife designed it wall to wall and I did all the general contracting; plus, we did a lot of the work ourselves (thank you YouTube). It’s was

Will Time Erase Our Heroes?

A few weeks back I had a conversation that rabbit-holed into food for thought that didn’t go down well. While music has always existed throughout human history, recorded music has been around for just over a century. It’s a blip on the celestial timeline, yet we’ve seen so many fabulous artists come and go, songs supposedly immortalized, and genres created. Going back just forty years, we’ve seen the advent of disco, punk, pop, hip-hop, rap, metal, grunge, techno, and sub-genres in between. All have one or more pages in history and all are pretty much derivatives of blues, soul, and

Watching The Ranch Wall Come Tumbling Down

by: Cody Starr Brad did an excellent job of explaining why we should trust Shayne Hollinger, Justin Frazell and the rest of The Ranch crew with our precious Texas/Red Dirt Music lives. As a regular Ranch listener who lives in DFW, I’m usually lurking on The Ranch “Wall” (the station’s online chat room) during the week. I don’t chat all that much but I’m there listening and watching the happenings as the DJs interact with the “Wallbangers” throughout the day (which in and of itself is pretty cool). As Friday afternoon rolled around I did notice a few more curveballs
