I agree with you completely about Casey Donahew and Josh Abbott. They have both played in Waco and the bar was charging 18 bucks respectivly. Those guys are mediocre at best, but they keep playing in Waco because they morons think that they are good. I miss the time when artist like Walt Wilkins, Josh Grider, Kim and Kristen Kelly would play a small bar for 30 people with just their guitar. It sucks now.

First let me start by saying I agree completely with what you’re saying Brad. I’ve been reading this column/blog for three or four years, and surprisingly have never commented. I just joined officially, but I’ve enjoyed every article I’ve read on this site for a long long time.
I guess the reason I’m replying is that I’m just as frustrated as you are about this. I haven’t been listening to the music on the scene as long as it’s been there. Hell back in the early 90’s I was listening to Garth Brooks thinking the establishment couldn’t get any better, given I wasn’t even in school then but I digress. I found Texas Country because I was wanting something different that Nashville wasn’t delivering. It’s the same story we all have.
That brings me to what I think about the music I love today. It’s still out there. Some of it does make it on to radio stations like the ranch, but the majority of what I hear on there is the same blandness I hear on the major radiostations-just like you said Brad. Why should acts strive to be different and unique, when they can just as easily make money recreating what has already been done? They can sell out a dancehall with their own versions of Pat Green. Once again you’ve said this and you’re right. There is a lack of origionality. You can’t distinguish an act from another in the first few measures of a song like before, just like you said. But perhaps there’s another reason for that too.
The bands we used to love and praise as original covered all of the bases. We enjoy a variety of music on this scene that we claim as our own. But each band that has come before has had their own distinctive style. Now, the standard is so high that everything else, while it may be very heartfelt and real just like theirs, is labeled a copy. Everything new is somewhere between Bleu and Jason Boland, to an extent at least. The acts may mix this and that but originality is almost impossible to achieve, it seemingly has been, but it’s getting worse. Bands are overlooked because the same G C D chord progression is used. I could go for pages about this, so I’ll let it go for now.
Greatness is still out there, but its not in the mainstream, I guess we’ll have to endure another cycle of it getting worse and worse before every drunk at the bar gets tired of the music sounding the same, and it changes.
Sorry for the length, I’ve been wanting to write this out for a while and I guess this is the venue…but I’d love to talk about it with anyone who’s willing

Thank you for calling out Casey Donawho. I'm at a loss as to how so many people dig that.
It's funny to me, these days you can tell half the time who a lot of these newby's are "inspired by." They want to be them, and it is grossly obvious. Sometimes all the way down to the way they dress. Such a turn off! They ride the coat tails with no talent, and people are falling for it.
I think the problem here is that a lot of the Texas scene fans are no different than the ones that buy that crap from Nashville. Texans aren't immune to having bad taste, and Casey and Josh are prime examples of that. Another is the Kyle Kenney Band. That guy wants to be Randy Rogers so bad. It's sickening.
For me, I'll just stick to the ones that I find to be real and original..... and I will love them like Sunday mornin'. I'll always be in the choir for my favorites, and plug 'em everywhere I can.
Just like we pluck the few from Nashville, like Jamey Johnson, we're are getting to the point that we have to pluck the few here in this scene. But I got my gaydar charged and ready.

I agree totally, but I'd like to add that it's not just the newbies that are not original... the last CD's by RRB, WB, Bingham and not to mention PG or CCR (past 3)have all been lame compared to previous releases.....Maybe (hopefully) that's why Stoney has stalled for so long....he see this and does not want to compromise.????

marksman, I'm sorry you feel that way. You're missing out dude. I'll admit that sometimes it may take me a little longer to catch on to some of them, because I had a preconceived notion of what it would be. But I also realize that these guys aren't 23 anymore, and I expect that to reflect in their music. I find more conviction in writings about current life more than the past.
There's a handful of artists that could fart and wrap in in a CD case - and I would buy it. Why? Considering the fact that I still listen to their older albums on heavy rotation, I think they're worth a thousands times more than what I paid for them. It's the least I can do to show appreciation.

Definitely agree with you on this subject. Unfortunately I find myself wanting to be like a lot of my favorite artists like the Cody, Randy, Wade, etc. Great guys and I love their music, but that's who everyone's trying to be. Then I hear Sean McConnell and he sings the songs that he cowrote with Wade, Randy, etc, and they sound so AMAZINGLY different. Definitely dig his music, unfortunately I have not been able to see him live yet. Yet, that is.

For the record, I've corresponded with Josh Abbott since the publication of this article and he's a stand-up guy who had the balls to tell me why he agreed with the sentiment of the article wholeheartedly, but didn't think he belonged in the category of bad music. Cool dude.
