{Face the Music} January 12, 2006

Happy New Year my friends, it’s the newest edition of Face the Music – the weekly article that highlights a few shows from the past week, provides you with a heads up for CD releases, updates you with life events for band members and the Galleywinter family, and gives you a glimpse of upcoming events in the Texas/Red Dirt Music scene. Check back each week to keep up with the dirt in and around the scene!

Shows in Review: Texas invaded the Rockies last week when Dickson Productions held its 21st annual Musicfest in beautiful Steamboat, Colorado. Dozens of Galleywinter members, thousands of Texas Music fans and over 30 bands made the pilgrimage to Colorado for the party! If you were wondering why there weren’t many shows last week, it’s because you were looking in the wrong state! Those who were in attendance came back with memories, pictures and stories. You can read about them in the TX/Red Dirt Events forum. Well, at least those fit to print!

Every year at MusicFest the Center for Texas Music History honors a living legend. This year they dedicated the event to one of the most influential members of the Texas Music community; Ray Wylie Hubbard. This year’s tribute included a 4 hour acoustic show dedicated to the music of Ray Wylie Hubbard. Participating in the event was: Mike Eli of the Eli Young Band, Cody Canada, Hayes Carll, Stoney Larue, The Dedringers, Brandon Rhyder, Wade Bowen, Bonnie Bishop & Matt Powell and many, many more.

Artists came together to talk about how Mr. Hubbard influenced their music, helped them in their careers and, of course, to sing his songs. The song swap was followed by a set featuring Ray Wylie himself accompanied on the guitar by Cody Canada and Ray’s 12 year old son, Lucas. This was truly a touching and once-in-a-lifetime event!

If you would like to see this living legend in action please visit RayWylie.com for tour dates and information. You can also hear Ray most Tuesday nights on KNBT FM in New Braunfels where he hosts his popular radio program Roots and Branches. If you’re not in the New Braunfels area you can listen online at KNBTFM.com
