River Jam Artist Preview: Kayla Ray

A honky-tonk throwback firecracker.  Relatively unknown outside of her central Texas roots, she’s drawn comparisons to other stone cold troubadours.  She’s somewhere between Dale Watson and Miranda Lambert if that makes sense to you.  Her records have been produced by Jason Eady so that should sort of give you an idea of what this girl brings to the table. Excited to have her back at River Jam this year and let people experience her music for the first time. **She is joining fellow River Jam artist Haley Cole at Floathouse this weekend if you’d like a preview! Greenfest 16 By the Bullets

-The river level and population was just about perfect.  Floated several times and the flow was ideal. -Met many new, cool people this year. -Reunited with some folks I hadn’t seen in too long. -Billy’s Ice was a dang good time on Friday night.  The Texas Renegade boys are some of the coolest and most talented in Texas. -Floating at midnight is cooler than floating at noon.  No pun intended. -Tim Murphy aka Crackers and Cucumbers is a talented photographer and I’m glad he was there to document the weekend. Greenfest Sunday: Kickstarting the Tip Jar at the Live Concertwindow

In this day and age of modern music the Kickstarter method of raising funds to make records is very common.  That concept is becoming so murky that recently, as a bit, a man started a Kickstarter to fund a potato salad purchase to prove a point.  The last time I saw a story on it, he had over $40,000. We added the Sunday portion of Greenfest five years ago.  In the early days of Greenfest we’d had a number of acoustic acts in front of the full bands on Saturday night and they always got swallowed up sonically.  There were

Greenfest Artist Preview: Flatland Cavalry

The Cleto Cordero-fronted outfit known as Flatland Cavalry has been bouncing on the buzz bubble of the Panhandle for some time.  Last year they dropped an EP that turned some ears and set the table for the monster 2016 release that became Humble Folks.  Their sound is reminiscent of Turnpike Troubadours both lyrically and musically.  The fiddle is pronounced and bouncy.  The lyrics real and emotive. The vocals achingly authentic.  This band is on the rise and playing Greenfest at much the same time as Turnpike did in 2010…on a rocketship headed to the top. By this time next year,
